Teaching Philosophy

I embrace the wisdom of the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” as the foundation of my teaching philosophy. I emphasize the collaboration between student scholars, instructor, and industry. My courses are designed to include collaboration with organizations that forge opportunities for networking, mentoring, and real-world insights. My commitment to fostering a student-centered learning environment means open dialogue, mutual respect, and an appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives.

My learning environment infuses ethical scholarship and experiential learning to empower student scholars to make informed career decisions. Drawing from over two decades of experience, I design collaborative and technology-integrated strategies that prepare students to be competitive in an evolving industry. I use both traditional and innovative assessments to ensure students not only understand theoretical concepts but also gain practical skills for real-world application. Through an emphasis on ethics, relevance, and collaboration, I aim to inspire continuous growth and critical engagement in each student's academic journey.

Leadership Philosophy

My leadership values closely align with the authentic and transformative leadership theories. Authentic leadership is characterized as “leaders [who] do what is right and good for both followers and society “ (Ruben et al., 2021, p. 142). These leaders are self-aware, transparent, and possess a focus on purpose. These traits align with my desire to establish and nurture purposeful relationships to move the needle of initiatives for the greater good of the organization. My leadership values also align with transformative leadership through the ability to effectively communicate initiatives and create buy-in from stakeholders larger than is normally expected. Rubin et al. (2021) define transformative leadership as having four factors: “idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration” (p. 140). I often use my journalism training and sales experience to create stories to help stakeholders visualize walking in the shoes of those who would be impacted by change. These practices stimulate interest in seeing initiatives to fruition and the realization of the impact contributions have made on others.
